Penang : Part 1 - Ferry Ride and Char Kway Teow

Chinese New Year is coming in 6 more days. This is exciting. Well, mainly because I get to wear a new dress. I bought a cheongsam. Yay! This is my 2nd cheongsam, not considering the fact that I have more sarees than cheongsam. I am not very Chinese after all. Haha!

120114 - My first getaway for the year. It is a local place in Malaysia, and it is famous for its food and historical places. This is Penang Island, a state located in the north. It was going to be a gastronomic weekend for me. Food food food! The gastronomic weekend started in KL itself where I had a bowl of dried pan mee (Hakka flat noodle). Since it's dried, it comes with a bowl of soup.

Along the drive, we stopped at Tapah Rest Area where there were lots of fruit stall. For the first time, I see the fruit 'abiu'. It is such a cute name! It also happens to be an English word. It a fruit that originated from South America. It is not too sweet, just a light tinge of pineapple sweetness.

We reached Penang Ferry Terminal right about noon. Yay, just in time for lunch in Penang! The ferry ride costs RM7.70 a car. It has been a long time since I took the ferry. I did not realise that we are not suppose to lock the car when parked in the ferry. Apparently, the alarm will be too sensitive and sounds when the ferry bobs up and down.

Land ahead! The ferry ride was about 20 minutes. We were off to have our lunch at Lorong Selamat. The must-have char kway teow (flat rice noodles) of Penang. Char Kway Teow has always been my favourite food since I was small. But it is so overrated in Penang that a small plate costs RM8! Yup, that is how much ours cost in that stall in Lorong Selamat! It was day-light robbery. That is mostly due to the prawns which was supposedly big. I beg to differ on the size.

Across the road was a famous product of Penang - Cheong Kim Chuan. This company sells nutmeg products - oil, balm, syrup, fruit. Its pink box is famous in Malaysia.

Next up - local sightseeing!
