Penang : Part 6 - Asam Laksa, Fishing Village, Seafood Dinner

Our gastronomic weekend in Penang continues with more food. Now, we have asam laksa. It's odd that this blog is suppose to be about travelling, but somehow this Penang post has more on food. Well, you cannot skip food if you go to Penang. It's a must. Asam laksa is a sour, fish-based soup. The main ingredients for asam laksa include shredded fish, normally mackerel, and finely sliced vegetables including cucumber, onions, red chillies, pineapple, lettuce, common mint,  and pink torch ginger flower. Asam laksa is normally served with either thick rice noodles or vermicelli. Now, in this place located at Jalan Kuala Jalan Baru, we make our own bowl of asam laksa with the provided ingredients. It's a father-daughter business. The small bowl costs us RM1.50. Very affordable compared to all the over-rated meals we have been having.

Done with asam laksa, we visited another fishing village. Here, they sell the fishes they caught. Really fresh. I saw lots of customers coming over to buy the catch. I also saw many iguana, huge ones, which were too quick for my camera.

In the evening, we went to a beach in Gertak Sanggul, where my friend stays to see the sunset. I love seeing sunset and sunrise. I sat on the rock basking myself against the hot evening rays. I love the sun, the heat, and my freckles because that is the evidence of all the sunrays.

At night, we had seafood dinner at a nearby restaurant - Hai Boey Seafood Restaurant.

Baby octopus for RM12. Bitter gourd for RM15. Spicy sour clam for RM12. Grouper fish for RM78. Salted egg crab for RM30. And the tasty dessert of mango skinned with fresh coconut is RM10. It was an absolutely deliciously amazing dinner! The baby octopus was not too spongy. Bitter gourd not bitter. Clam is sweet surprisingly. Fish is fresh. Oh I love the salted egg. It was finger-licking seafood. And the dessert - what a unique combination.

Close by, there was a table which ordered for a lobster. So, we beckoned the waitress to come to our table to show us the lobster. It is huge! RM500 worth of lobster.

The next day - our last day of gastronomic weekend.
