Oceania : Part 10 - Franz Josef to Punakaiki

10092010 - We are in Franz Josef. We are going to see some ice today! Our activity that day was to go on the Franz Josef Glacier Hike. For half a day.

First, register at the counter.

Then, obtain the tags to whichever equipment you require - boots, jacket, pants, and gloves. Also, a declaration that you are fit and understand the requirements of the hike.

Counter to get your boots according to your size. Next to the counter is the crampon counter. Crampons are used to walk on ice. I told the guide I am Asian size 6, and he gave me size 3 boots.

The bus drove on for about 1 hour before we started our walk. We walked through a pathway into a jungle and out into the open.

Straight ahead was Franz Josef Glacier.

It was a 2km walk across the open area. Anyone can walk through the open area but those who are not registered for the hike stopped until this line as they are not properly dressed for it.

Then, before we ventured further to the glacier, the lady guide explained to us on how to use the crampons. The crampons are actually kept in the red pouch. It's not used to walk on stones. Just ice. The crampons can be worn on any kind of boots.

Crossing over to the glacier. Franz Josef Glacier was named after the emperor of Austria. Haast, the explorer found this glacier and decided to name if after his emperor to get some rewards. He did get the rewards to continue exploring but Franz Josef never stepped on 'his' glacier before.

Franz Josef Glacier is a UNESCO World Heritage Area, as this is one of the 3 places in the world that has glacier next to a rainforest. The other 2 places are Fox Glacier and somewhere in Argentina.

After the hike, we were headed to Punakaiki. Stopped at Hokitika to see more jades. New Zealand is abundant with jades.

Finally, we reached YHA Punakaiki! Our hostel is in a small jungle.
