In 2010, I went to Christchurch, New Zealand for 10 days. And my friend has planned that we shall fly to Melbourne via Air Asia and fly to Christchurch via Jetstar. It was a very affordable flight. My air-ticket costs about RM1,650 for return. Two countries too! Yahoo! We spent 2.5 days in Melbourne --> 10 days in South Island, New Zealand --> 1 day in Melbourne.
31.08.2010 - Today is our National Day. On this day in 2011, I was in the train to Tibet (Tibet & Nepal - Part 2 : Staying in the Train). We took a night flight to Melbourne and woke up to the sunrise. It was an 8-hour flight.
We reached at 9am, and it was cold. Walked out from the airport and we took the airport shuttle to our accommodation - the YHA Hostel Melbourne Metro. In Australia and New Zealand, we stayed in YHA! They are a God-send for budget travellers! Affordable and clean. Plus a good place to meet many travelling youths!
We went to the cafetaria and ordered breakfast. It is quite expensive, hence it's best to cook your own meals. Yes, everyone in YHA usually prepare their own meals. There is a kitchen for you to cook. Very clean too! After breakfast, we walked to the nearest tram station. And it was drizzling. Not helping when we were already cold due to the weather. We ventured around Melbourne town the whole day.
Here comes the free tram. Free trams are in this red colour. Australians we asked called it burgundy colour. Red is much simpler, right? We stopped after 2 stops. Walked into Melbourne Central which is a shopping mall. The building looks cool inside. After walking around the mall which looks like any other malls, we walked outside and ventured the streets. I love the leaf-less trees. It was end of winter when we travelled to Melbourne.
Walked until St Paul Cathedral. Opposite the Cathedral is Flinders Station. This is one of Australia's heritage building. It's one of the train stations. We went inside the Cathedral. I love stained glasses. I like the colours and the drawings on it.
Then, we took the free tram again to go to Harbour Town Shopping Centre. It was quite empty. But it is a cool shopping centre! The stuff is quite affordable, although I did not buy anything. I saw some boots I love but there were none in my size! How disappointing!!
The tram stopped at National Treasury Building for 8 minutes. Unsure why but probably to take a break. So, my friends and I took photo with the tram. I love the photo with my reflection against the window of the tram. The tram continued its journey and we stopped at a station near the Jail. We were walking towards Lygon Street for Italian food!
Finally, we chose Universal. Randomly. Most probably because we were so hungry.
What we had - Steak served with beer battered chips, salad and sauce.
Calamari with beer battered chips.
Chicken with beer battered chips. Honestly, I did not taste beer in any of the chips.
And for dessert - chocolate brownie with vanilla ice-cream.
