Singapore: Part 1 - Day 1: Arrival and nasi lemak

Earlier this year, I flew home to celebrate Chinese New Year with my family. There is no Chinese New Year celebration in Sweden plus I don't have the urge to invite anyone over and it is winter too. I just want to hibernate instead. So, I did not need to contemplate long to decide to go home for Chinese New Year. I planned a visit to Singapore for a week before we travelled back to Malaysia, as my boyfriend has never been to Singapore. I travelled to Singapore three times, in 2009 and in 2011. It was a weekend getaway during both visits, and 1 time in 2012 for my sister's graduation.

In 2009, it was a walk around town. I remembered I was in Haw Par Villa, walked on the HSBC Treetop walk, visited China Town as well as Changi Chapel and Museum.

In 2011, it was Universal Studios on Sentosa Island, China Town, and Little India.

This year in 2025, I visited nature areas and lots of food experience, thanks to my personal tour guide aka my sister. Lucky me! I did not know that Singapore has beautiful nature, despite being a small country. I usually take photo of new places and each food but I did not do it during this trip as I got my sister to take the photos. All credit to her for the good shots!

Food
I did not take photo of each food or jot down the prices this time for the trip so the costs here are those that are available on the eateries' website.

We arrived in Singapore in the afternoon and took a taxi to our hotel, Fragrance Hotel Balestier. It is an affordable hotel. Hotels and hostels are expensive in town so I found a place outside of the city center and I excluded Geyland area despite being the cheapest. However, the first room we got smelt of mould and we requested a new room which we got immediately. I don't know how mould smelt like but my boyfriend could smell it. There were several problems with the room, but we were there just for sleeps and not to stay in so we are satisfied.

After checking in and unpacking, we had lunch, and my boyfriend had a massage at Natureland. Apparently, it is a recommended place when we shared on the massage place. Some beer for my boyfriend and then dinner with my sister's friends at Coconut Club Beach Road. A recommended place to have their signature nasi lemak. Her friends are so lovely to treat us. All food were so delicious. We even had second helpings of the nasi lemak.

We had:
1) Signature Nasi Lemak S$21 - a serving of coconut rice, fried egg, anchovies, peanuts, cucumber, sambal, and the Signature Ayam Goreng Berempah - Spiced and fried organic chicken, crispy rempah crumbs

2) Terung Asam Manis S$9 - Fried eggplant in our special sauce, aromatic herbs, gula melaka, coconut milk

3) Chicken Satay S$24 - Charcoal-grilled chicken and chicken tail skewers red onions, cucumber, peanut sauce

4) Gado-gado S$14 - Salad with fried tempeh, vegetables, potatoes, hard-boiled eggs, belinjau crackers, peanut sauce

5) Otah S$16 - Charcoal-grilled mackerel fish cake, herbs and spices wrapped in banana leaf

Best welcome dinner! After dinner, we parted ways, and we saw a Swedish restaurant, Fika Swedish Cash and Bistro where the menu has Swedish names of the food. My boyfriend, being the spelling police, pointed out spelling error in the menu...

We took the bus back to our hotel.
