The Story
04072025 - The morning started with a breakfast buffet in the accommodation. I was very surprised to see prayer words for before and after meals on the wall. I wondered if this is a religious school. The breakfast kept me full until dinner time. I enjoyed the brown cheese. This is caramelised cheese. I had two eggs which was a good way to keep me full. I know I am not missing out on any local food in Norway as the food here is similar to Sweden. Plus, everything is expensive here.
We took a walk around the area and enjoyed the view of the waters for a bit. I needed a water bottle as I forgot to bring one from home. So, we went to Kiwi grocery store and I could not find any small water bottle. They sell sugary water and I thought that I finally found one and bought it but when I reached back to the hotel, I found out that I bought a 1-liter concentrated juice which needs to be diluted. Thankfully, it was not hot outside so I could survive without water temporarily.
Then, we decided to drive to Sukkertoppen. The hill is 314 meters high. Going into nature is definitely a good idea in Norway. We had difficulty finding the parking space and almost gave up the idea. Initially, I read that it is near a school but the area around the school was closed for construction. Then, I found another site that described a parking space at Osane sports hall. The sports hall was not in Google Map but luckily, my friend spotted the hall when we drove past it! Did a U-turn and parked. Plenty of parking space. Phew.
Our route from the sports hall was a steep route, but not too steep, and it joins to the main trail. We joined at the middle of the main trail. It started to drizzle too and it turned into a bit of rain which I did not really enjoy, but as long as my hands were not frozen and not in pain, I am satisfied.
Once we joined to the main trail, it became easy. It was flat and a gradual increase to the top. There were large stone slabs and huge rocks. It may be slippery when it rains. It was windy too as we walked out in the open and there were no large trees.
I thought I had reached the top when I saw this stone slab but it was not. It was another 15 minutes walk. This stone slab acted as a border between two areas, Ålesund and Bergund from 1923 to 1968, and from 1968, the two areas were put under Ålesund. There was another stone slab further up which explained its purpose, which made me understood the B and Å letters.
An hour later from our start, we reached the top of Sukkertoppen! We walked to the end of the trail. There were many people on the trail.
The walk down was quick and we missed the junction where we had to turn off to go to the sports hall. We were talking so much that we walked the entire trail. Until I noticed an owl carving on a tree trunk which looked unfamiliar to me. That was then when we realised that we missed the wrong turn. We checked on Google Map and saw that the walk back to the parking lot is about 20 minutes which was not too bad. We reached the start of the trail, which was where we were supposed to start but could not as we could not finding a parking space. We were back down after 50 minutes since we left the top.
We drove to Ålesund Town and found a parking space by the roadside. We paid until 4pm because after that was free parking. Found lunch at Raccoon Coffee. Someone recommended the place as it served good coffee. Owner is from Australia and my friend who has stayed in Australia speaks very highly of the coffee in Australia. So, we went there. In my opinion, the cappucino that I had was not as good as the one I had in Arlanda airport before our departure to Ålesund. Plus, expensive here too and the cup is small i.e. lesser content.
A seagull break-in happened in the cafe. I was typing about my day in my phone and suddenly, I heard a scream on my left and I felt wind from something flapping on my right. My friend stood up and I did the same to hurry myself from the place. When I looked back, I saw a seagull! Can you see the broken glass door? The seagull ate my friend's food. The staff managed to carry the seagull outside with a cloth.
We walked around Old Town and I got some photos with the trolls!
A fire broke out in 1904 and most of the wooden buildings burnt down. Within two years, Ålesund was rebuilt and the architecture that we see today were inspired by the art nouveau style in Germany. The architecture here does remind me of the old towns in Europe.
From Wikipedia on the definition of art nouveau: It was often inspired by natural forms such as the sinuous curves of plants and flowers. Other characteristics of Art Nouveau were a sense of dynamism and movement, often given by asymmetry or whiplash lines, and the use of modern materials, particularly iron, glass, ceramics and later concrete, to create unusual forms and larger open spaces.
We saw the 150-year old lighthouse. It is a short lighthouse. The lighthouse is room number 47 for Hotel Brosundet. According to the website, this costs NOK3500 per night. Per time of writing.
We went into Kiwi grocery store and bought some fruits (strawberry and nectarine) for our ferry cruise tomorrow. This time, I managed to get a proper water bottle. For dinner, we went to a recommended fish and chips place, Jaf. I was not keen on chips so I got just the fish. Quite filling too, as we had fruit after dinner. It was raining so we decided to take away to eat in our room.
The end for Day 2!
