Oceania : Part 5 - Mount Cook to Dunedin

05.09.2010 - We are going to venture around Mount Cook. It was cold in the morning. The wind was strong. You can see the view of the mountains while cooking in the kitchen. Nice view! After breakfast, we drove towards Tasman Glacier. It is one of the must-see places in Mount Cook. It was a very short walk, and soon enough, we did not feel the chill anymore. The view was breathtaking in Tasman Glacier.

This is Blue Lakes. The water do not look blue at all.

Tasman Glacier. We were actually not allowed to venture further down, but I got curious. The glacier looks jagged upclose. And smooth in certain areas. I was fearful if there was going to be any avalanche or the glacier will rise up.

We walked back towards our car. The view of the mountains is amazing, yes?

Drove to Sir Edmund Hillary Center. Found out that Sir Edmund Hillary used Mount Cook as a training ground to conquer Mount Everest. A visitor told me that Mount Cook is more difficult to climb now, as part of the mountain has fell. We went to the Centre, but found out have to pay to go to the Exhibition Room. Lingered at the souvenirs. There was a particular hat which was made of the softest wool I have ever touched. It was so soft I loved it.

We drove to our next destination - Dunedin. We passed by Kurow Town and had lunch outside a restaurant. We had avocado-jam bread! Awesome! We bought avocado and just smeared it in the bread. It is delicious! The town was really quiet by the way. I looked into our Guide Book and noted that Kurow Town has good winery!

Stopped at Kurow Winery. The finest wine in Waitaka District. A Southern District. This winery was recently built 3 years back but has won numerous awards. Of course, we got some free taste of the wine, and bought a bottle back. Wine tasting is an interesting experience.

Stopped at Maori Art which was seen on the rocks.

Went to Moeraki Boulders. The pathway we used was from a private restaurant. Moeraki Boulders looks like turtle eggs.

Reached YHA Dunedin. Quite Victorian-style hostel. Dunedin was very windy. Papers were flying about on the streets.

We went to see the steepest road in the world - Baldwin Street. It is so steep that a staircase was built next to the road for people to walk up. In the YHA, we noticed that there were many steep streets in Dunedin!
